In January 2024, Bulgarian state-owned gas transmission operator Bulgartransgaz signed an operational agreement with Turkish peer Botas for interconnection between the countries’ gas transmission systems at the Strandzha-Malkoclar point.

Hungary

February 2024, Hungary’s state energy giant MVM and Turkiye’s BOTAS have finalised the details of a gas delivery contract for the delivery of 275 mcn of gas starting in the second quarter, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjárto said after the Hungarian-Turkish Joint Economic Commission meeting in Ankara: https://pro.intellinews.com/hungary-and-turkey-finalise-gas-agreement-312741/?source=turkey

February 2024, Turkey’s government-run Anadolu Agency quotes Hungary’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Peter Szijjarto as saying: ‘Azerbaijani gas’ to be piped to Hungary via Turkey: https://pro.intellinews.com/azerbaijani-gas-to-be-piped-to-hungary-via-turkey-says-minister-312850/?source=turkey

It seems that Hungary will receive the gas with a ‘made in azerbaijan’ label on it.

Iran

Iran has three gas-export deals with neighbouring Turkey, Iraq, and Pakistan, amounting to 10bn, 20bn, and 8bn cubic metres per year, respectively. Over the past year, Iran’s gas flow dropped to zero in certain months.

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity also said in a statement earlier this month that Iran had stopped gas exports, used to feed thermal power plants (TPPs), over “maintenance work,” blaming Tehran for the loss of more than 4,000 megawatts of power.

The contract with Pakistan has remained dormant since 2014 as Islamabad, fearing US sanctions, has failed to keep its side of the bargain in a multi-billion-dollar pipeline project to deliver Iranian natural gas to the energy-starved nation.

Erdogan-Raisi meeting on January 23 revolved around the extension of Iran’s gas export contract to Turkey, the volume increase, the export of Iranian petrochemical and oil products to Turkey, and Turkish companies’ investment in Iran’s petroleum industry.

Tehran and Ankara agreed to lay a new gas pipeline to take Iranian natural gas to energy-hungry Turkey.

“It was also decided that Turkey would invest in Iran’s gas fields,” he added.

According to the semi-official news agency ISNA, a top topic raised at the high council meeting was a possible gas swap deal involving Turkmenistan, Iran, and Turkey.
